At the end of 2016, Amazon mentioned its face recognition software RekogniTIon in an AWS announcement, but did not disclose any functional information of the software. However, starting today, RekogniTIon will officially enter the public eye.
According to foreign media reports, the Northern California State ACLU (Communication Exchange Association) said this week that the Washington County Police Department in Oregon will begin to use the Amazon facial recognition software RekogniTIon for the identification of suspicious identity. It is understood that the service is part of the Amazon cloud computing service AWS. According to Amazon, RekogniTIon can be used for real-time facial recognition of tens of millions of faces, capable of detecting up to 100 faces from densely packed, challenging photos. ACLU pointed out that Amazon is looking for potential customers of the software across the United States, including some companies that make human body cameras.
In response, ACLU urged Amazon to stop selling face recognition technology to US police, which believes the service may raise public security issues, including privacy issues such as civil liberties and civil rights. ACLU's lawyer, Matt Cagle, wrote in a post related to the announcement: "People should be free to walk on the street without government supervision. But by automating large-scale surveillance, a facial recognition system similar to Rekognition threatens People's freedoms also pose a particular threat to communities that are currently unfair in a political climate. Once these powerful surveillance systems are built and deployed, threats will be difficult to eliminate."
The Washington Post contacted Washington County's press officer, Jeff Talbot, and Jeff Talbot told the Washington Post: "The facial recognition technology is not much different from the existing system. The goal of the ACLU is to publicize that it is solving crime problems. The work done does not involve large-scale surveillance or non-target surveillance activities."
Amazon also objected to public safety issues, and it did not believe that Rekognition was invasive. Amazon says that as a technology, Amazon Rekognition has many useful applications in real life. At the same time, as more and more companies begin to use advanced technologies such as Amazon Rekognition, the effectiveness of AI services in their lives will only increase. If people just choose to disable AI technology just because some people may abuse AI technology, the quality of life will get worse. Is this like because customers can't buy a computer because someone might use the computer for illegal purposes? Like other Amazon AWS services, Amazon requires customers to use Amazon Rekognition in compliance with laws and regulations.
