Summary:

The MAX8901 boost converter can drive 2 to 6 series white LEDs (WLEDs) at a fixed current, providing a uniform brightness WLED driver for mobile phones, PDAs, and other handheld devices for LCD backlighting. Operating at a fixed 750kHz (typ) switching frequency, the MAX8901 allows the use of small external components that are optimized to maintain maximum efficiency over the entire voltage range of a 1-cell Li-Ion/Li-Polymer battery.

The MAX8901 features an internal soft-start to eliminate inrush current during startup. It also features input overvoltage protection, WLED overvoltage protection, and shutdown mode. It consumes only 0.01μA (typical) in shutdown mode. There is no WLED current in shutdown mode, and the forward conduction voltage of the WLED is higher than the input voltage. In addition, the devices feature undervoltage lockout (UVLO) and thermal shutdown protection.
