June 15, 2010 - China News Osram Opto Semiconductors' new generation of OSTAR Compact has better high current capability and lower thermal resistance, capable of handling up to 6A in pulse mode, especially suitable for A miniature pocket projector for small mobile devices. These high-power LEDs can actually increase the brightness of the projector, depending on the design of the small projector.
The new OSTAR Compact offers more light output, while the package size is as small as the previous version, only 3.9 mm x 3.6 mm, so small projectors can achieve higher brightness without increasing the size. The drive current of the new LED has been increased from the previous version of 4 A to 6 A. In pulse mode (typically 120 Hz, 2 ms, Ts = 25 °C), the brightness of amber light is up to 350 lm and green light is up to 600. Lm, blue light up to 165 lm. Thanks to the new packaging materials, the thermal resistance of the new LEDs has been reduced from the previous version of 6 K/W to 3 K/W, which allows for more efficient heat dissipation.
This high-power LED uses a 2 mm2 chip and represents a significant improvement in overall performance, thanks to a modified epitaxial process and a more uniform power distribution through additional bond wires. "This allows us to successfully design compact LEDs with higher current handling capabilities. Our new OSTAR Compact provides higher luminous power for small projectors," said Wolfgang Schnabel, LED projection marketing manager at OSRAM Opto Semiconductors in Germany. A new generation of LEDs with high current capability expands the OSTAR Compact LED portfolio for projection applications. The portfolio also includes LEDs with 750 μm chips and full color LEDs with 1 mm2 chips.
