Among them, large-size backlights and lighting fixtures will become the most important applications.
According to the International Semiconductor Equipment Materials Industry Association, despite the strong demand in the LED market, the production capacity is still lower than the market demand. The shortage of supply is about 20% to 30%. Therefore, it is estimated that six new plants will be put into operation this year and next year, mostly in Taiwan and the mainland.
According to the association's statistics, there are 35 LED factories in Taiwan in 2009, the highest density in the world, accounting for 40% of the global LED factory. This year, Taiwan's LED construction and equipment investment amount can reach 600 million US dollars, including TSMC, Jing Yuan Optoelectronics, AUO and Xinqimei actively build factories, with the largest amount of investment in the world.
However, the association pointed out that Taiwan's LED output is the world's number one, and its output value is second only to Japan's record. It may be rewritten this year. South Korea's LED output value is expected to surpass Taiwan this year.
According to the analysis of the association, the reason is that Taiwan lacks brand blessing. Cao Shilun, president of the International Semiconductor Equipment Materials Industry Association in Taiwan and Southeast Asia, said that the LED industry in Taiwan is facing cost control, insufficient capacity and efficiency. This is the beginning of the semiconductor and solar photovoltaic industry. The situation at the start is very similar. Therefore, the industry needs to develop common standards, find out more cost-effective solutions for the supply chain, and adjust the product structure.
