Researchers at Georgia Tech in the United States have developed a wearable device called FingerPing that translates sign language and controls text or action apps by tracking user hand movements.
According to reports, the FingerPing system consists of a wrench and a watch. The finger will produce a sound pulse that is then transmitted through the user's hand to the adapter on the watch. The sound pulse is manipulated by the hand movement and the watch can therefore detect which commands the user is trying to use. Gestures don't have to be large, just tap your finger or a small gesture.
FingerPing recognizes 22 finger gestures that can be set to different commands, including a single-finger swipe to play music or translate sign language on the device. FingerPing uses 12 hand bones to track gestures. For example, FingerPing recognizes the numbers 1~10 in sign language.
Cheng Zhang, a Ph.D. student at the School of Interactive Computing at FingerPing, said the adapter recognizes these small differences. Under different gestures, the sound output from the finger will travel on different paths on the palm. For example, when the palm is open, there is only one direct path from the thumb to the wrist. Sound pulses will take different paths under different gestures, and will form unique features.
There are many applications for this system, but the most optimistic is sign language translation. Although there are some systems that can translate sign language in real time, these systems are usually composed of huge lenses, which are not only cumbersome and difficult to carry around, but others may always feel uncomfortable when pointed at by the lens. Because the FingerPing system is easy to carry around, more people want to use this sign language translation system.
