Protein G is an immunoglobulin binding protein expressed in Group C and Group G Streptococcus bacteria, although very similar to Protein A, but with different binding specificities. It is a 65 kDa (G148 protein G) and 58 kDa (C40 protein G) cell surface protein, which is purified by binding to the Fab and Fc regions. The natural molecule Protein G also binds to albumin, but since serum albumin is a major contaminant of antibodies, the recombinant form Protein G has been genetically engineered to remove albumin binding sites.

Protein G products for antibody purification

The PurKineTM Protein G purification system is highly efficient for the purification of mammalian serum or other liquid-derived IgG. ProteinG can purify monoclonal or polyclonal IgGs that are not efficiently bound to Protein A. For most mammalian IgGs, protein G has a stronger affinity than protein A, particularly for certain subclasses, including human IgG3, mouse IgGl and rat IgG2a. Unlike protein A, protein G does not bind human IgM, IgD and IgA. PurKineTM Protein G Purified Fillers are also available in pre-packed columns and kits for added convenience.
