According to the BBC news on April 17, Hermes Express announced that it has begun testing automated receiving robots on the streets of London. The autonomous driving robot was developed by Estonian delivery robot company Starship Technologies, which is mainly used to collect parcels. In some parts of London, Just Eat, the UK's largest takeaway provider, has used the robot to deliver food. The delivery robot is 55 cm high, 70 cm long, weighs 18 kg and has a speed of 6.4 km/h.
Professor Andy Miah of the School of Environmental and Life Sciences at the University of Salford believes that if delivery robots are found in major cities, there may be some adverse reactions. He said: "At present, there are many pedestrians in big cities, and it is difficult for delivery robots to drive on the streets."
Hermes Express will use a delivery robot within a 2 mile (about 3.2 km) radius of the control center to collect a certain number of packages in 30 minutes to test how the robot can complete the task in a tight turnaround time. Each robot can carry up to 10 kg of cargo under the premise of ensuring safety, and the customer can use the robot with the password sent to their smartphone.
The robot travels steadily and has many advantages over airborne drones, such as being able to carry heavier loads and easier control of the route.
In contrast, Starship's ground robots will be closely monitored by operators. Each operator will supervise three robots through the onboard camera to control them crossing the road or other challenging situations. Starship said that each operator should be able to control up to 100 robots, which will greatly improve the operating cost performance.
